5 Reasons to Care about Domestic Violence
What’s domestic violence, anyway?!
- It’s a pattern of coercive behaviors designed to dominate an intimte partner or family member (the use of power and control)
- It’s physical, pychological, emotional, financial, spiritual, cyber / online, etc.
- It’s abuse between family members, significant others, roommates, etc.
- It can look like bullying, name calling, threats, intimidation, hurtful jokes, witholding medicine or money, isolation, hitting, biting, raising hands and fist, and so much more
Domestic violence can happen to anyone.
We’ve all seen cases in the news that involve the rich and famous as well as what society considers the down and out. Domestic violence affects both males and females. No one is off limits.
You know someone who is a victim of domestic violence, whether or not you realize it. According to the statistics, one in four women and one in seven men report severe physical domestic violence by their significant other. That’s outrageous!
Domestic violence harms more women than car accidents, robberies, and rapes combined. Do you see the pattern? The thing we should really be afraid of is hardly discussed. How in the world can people be protected?
Your child, grandchild, godchild, niece or nephew is at risk. Domestic violence is happening at an alarming rate among teens. Espcially online / cyber bullying and threatening. Our young people need us to be aware of the things they’re going through daily. Approximately one in five female h.s. students report being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.
Domestic violence is very prevalent among the elderly. At one point it was reported that in almost 60% of elder abuse and neglect incidents, the perpetrator is a family member. Two thirds of the perpetrators are adult children or spouses.
Every day, there is another victim losing their life to domestic violence. I survived. I refuse to be ashamed or silent. People need to know that there is life, healing and happiness after abuse. I’m committed to spreading awarenes about what domestic violence is and what it may look like.
