The Aging Challenge

Across social media (it started on Facebook) there has been a challenge. The #HowHardDidAgingHitYou challenge. It’s been fun to look at the differences in people between the last 10 or 12 years. I participated and had fun. Then, it hit me. WOW I had so much more than years between my pictures.

(2007 vs 2018)

The challenge stired me up. I had a worship session thinking about how faithful God has been to me and how hard I worked toward healing. The picture on the left was me in my mask. I was in an abusive relationship. I was unhappy and didn’t know my purpose. I was emotionally broken and disconnected from my core. I didn’t know who I was. I had a job as a general manager, was a college student, and was active in the church. In fact, I think I was teaching Sunday School. I was pretty on the outside but inside was confusion and darkness.

The woman on the right has weak moments. She gets tired. She lives every day in pain. She is a survivor. She thrives despite the scars and ghosts of her past. She lives with depression yet refuses to cower under it and suffer in silence. The woman on the right found her voice. She discovered her strength. Her laugh is genuine. Her smile is real. Every part of her is dedicated to wellness, honesty and healing. She is a warrior. She’s not a victim anymore. She’s royalty. A daughter of the King of kings and Lord of lords. She’s full of love and empathy. She’s elegant, well-spoken and speaks her truth. She refuses to back down and hide away from the storms of life. She’s a product of God’s love and restoration. She’s on fire, focused and free. She’s the woman I wanted so long to be. She’s not perfect but she’s real.

What are the differences between who you were 10 or 12 years ago and the person you are now? Of course, you don’t have to answer me. I ask so that you can talk with and reflect on yourself. Time can bring a lot of change and it’s my hope that we each continue to change for the better.

Hope Always,

💜Missy

Heyyy!! My name is Melissa. I'm affectionately called Missy. I'm a survivor who has learned to thrive! As one who has overcome depression, suicide, abuse and physical illness, I know that hope is real. Everything that I've been through has been for my good. My struggle helped me to more clearly see me and discover hope, happiness, and purpose.
