October is quite a busy month. The thing I’m most passionate about is that October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Some time ago, I walked away from an abusive relationship that nearly claimed my mind and my life. Honestly, I’m still putting some of the pieces back together. What matters most is that I am doing well.… Read More

Emotional & mental healing changes so much. Not every step of the process is easy but you can make it. (1) Remember why you started the journey. Rehearse this over and over again in your mind. (2) Create or identify your support system. Connect with people who understand the process of healing and recovery. (3) Limit negativity and blame. Whenyou catch yourself speaking negatively to yourself stop yourself and say, "The abuse was not my fault. I was able to learn from this experience and that's good. Even when you feel guilt and want to blame yourself, resist the urge. Find something about yourself to celebrate instead.

You are NOT crazy, dramatic or imaging things. If something about a person or a relationship is not sitting well with you then deal with it. Please don't ignore it. Talk with a friend or professional who can help you process your emotions or thoughts. You just may save yourself from a lot of pain. 💜Missy
I was so happy when we first started dating. But over time I became literally drained. What started out so sweet became painful. I eventually lived every day in sadness. I could feel the weight of the relationship. I just thought we needed to be fixed. He didn't want to fix us. He wanted to change and control me. He wanted to dictate who my friends were, the kind of clothes I wore and who I was at my core. He wanted me all to himself and didn't like how "popular I was". Those were his words. He wanted more from me than I could give and eventually I began to break under his weight.
The good news?! I SURVIVED and now I'm here to educate and inspire others to live after abusive and toxic relationships. #yeswecan

The balance in a relationship can easily be thrown off when one person tries to take all of the control. Someone trying to take control can look different ways. One really important red flag to consider is when someone insists on being involved in your simple, day-to-day decision making. Decisions such as the clothes you wear, the type of food you like to eat, the music you listen to, etc. These decisions do not need to involve another person. People who like to be in control in relationships will also begin to attempt to dictate to you how you should feel about simple things. On a larger level, they will tell you how to think and how to feel in terms of your emotions and responses to life or to the relationship itself.

Life after abuse is difficult. The anger, shame, self-hate, resentment, embarrassment, and overall feeling of being lost are overwhelming. What got me through was loving on ME and making my wellness a priority. I had to stop rehearsing what my ex did and I had to focus on my life and healing. Speaking up and telling close friends and family things I'd been through was life-changing. Shifting from being a victim into a fighter didn't happen over night but it happened! 🙌🏾 _____________________

Life is not a competition. I have compared myself to others so many times but truth be told we all are someone special. We all need one another. We all have something to give in this life. May we all realize it before it's too late.
